Who we are

Wessex Institute is part of the School of Medicine at the University of Southampton. Our mission is to support the national and international prosecution of the highest possible quality health technology assessment (HTA) and HTA-related research, in order to inform and improve the provision of health care.

We are a multidisciplinary group of people: academics, administrators, doctors, health economists, health service researchers, information specialists, managers, midwives, nurses, public health specialists and systematic reviewers.

We have three main and linked areas of work:

  • Health technology assessment (HTA): HTA is the evaluation of the costs, effectiveness and broader impact of all methods used by health professionals to promote health, prevent and treat disease and improve rehabilitation and care. It is a vital component of evidence-based clinical policy and practice.
  • Research: exploring, developing and doing health technology assessment.
  • Research management: managing the NHS HTA Programme on behalf of the Department of Health.
